Whether you are the owner of a practice or one of the team members who make the practice happen, you are a leader to others. Perhaps it is your staff you are leading, or maybe you are leading the patients/clients towards ideal care, or maybe you are a mom or dad leading your children, or coaching a team, etc.
Here are some thoughts on your role as a leader:
1. YOU ARE THE GOAL SETTER:
“The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you.” – Max DePree
2. YOU ARE THE DIRECTOR:
“Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.” – Dwight Eisenhower
3. YOU ARE THE ANALYZER:
“Hindsight is 20/20 vision.” – Anonymous
4. YOU ARE THE COURAGEOUS ONE:
“Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway.” – John Wayne
5. YOU PRODUCE LEADERS:
“I start with the premise that the function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.” – Ralph Nader
To lead, you must motivate others toward taking positive action. Therefore, your starting point to becoming a leader is to answer this question: What positive actions do you want others to take?
Next, you need to stir in others the desire to participate in this positive action. If you look at how the greatest leaders in history have emotionally affected others, you will see they get their followers excited! They give them hope. They motivate them to do great things.
Those are the two steps, take them and see what effects you can create.
By the way, you do not need permission to be the leader. You just lead!
