A healthcare professional just told me last night that he feels on the verge of greatness and that he just needs to go up another level. It inspired me to write about this because he has a really full scope practice that in fact is exactly that … on the brink of being truly amazing. It’s like a photograph that is really cool but slightly out of focus, or an athlete that is pretty darned good but just needs some training and coaching to reach his full potential and be truly great.
Practices and their owners are often like diamonds in the rough that have a lot of potential. You have been very technically trained as a practitioner, but probably not trained at all in the management of your practice and so you are not reaching your full potential, yet you know you have it in you.
What does “greatness” mean to you and to your own practice? What needs to be accomplished to become great? What’s holding you back? Do you have a specific vision for your practice that you want to achieve? How are your boss skills, your sales skills, your marketing skills, your financial management skills, your hiring/firing skills, your staff training skills, leadership skills?
Have you ever sat down and worked this out? There is a famous saying: You can’t get “there” if you don’t know where “there” is. It is important to take a little time to work out where you want your practice to end up one day and list out all the goals and ideas you have for it and name out the priority sequence in getting them accomplished and then get going on those steps. By the way, don’t be shy about hiring expert help.
